There is a point where copyright enforcement stops looking like protection and starts looking like control.

That is where this story lives.

Universal Music Group is currently at the center of a growing legal fight against AI music platforms like Suno and Udio, accusing them of training on copyrighted music without permission. According to CNBC, major record labels allege these systems were built using large amounts of copyrighted material without authorization. The claim is straightforward. These systems learned from real artists without paying for it, and now they can generate songs that compete with the originals.

That argument is not unreasonable on its face. Artists should have rights. Their work should not be scraped, repackaged, and turned into infinite output without consent.

But that is not the whole story.

Because while major labels fight to control the future of AI music, platforms like YouTube are reacting in the way large platforms always do when pressure comes from above. They tighten enforcement, automate decisions, and expand the blast radius.

This kind of broad, automated enforcement does not happen in a vacuum. It is a direct response to increasing legal and financial pressure from rights holders as platforms scramble to get ahead of the AI music fight.

Protection Is One Thing. Platform Lockout Is Another.

I can understand the argument for policing direct infringement. I can understand the concern around voice cloning and near perfect replication. I can even understand why companies like UMG are pushing hard on AI platforms.

What I do not accept is how quickly that pressure turns into platform wide consequences for people who are not part of that fight.

This is where the conversation stops being theoretical for me.

This is where it becomes personal.

I Literally Cannot Access the Page to Cancel My Account

I literally cannot access the page to cancel my account.

Not hidden. Not confusing. Not buried.

Inaccessible.

At the same time, my account access is restricted, and over a decade of watch history, subscriptions, and usage data is effectively locked away. Not deleted. Not recoverable. Just out of reach.

This is what that looks like in practice:

A clean message. A closed system. No actual solution.

This is not just about content moderation anymore. This is about basic account control.

The Support Experience Made It Worse

So I contacted support.

I asked for access. I asked for clarity. I asked for my data to be unlocked. I asked for a way to cancel a service I can no longer properly access.

I was told I would receive a response within 24 hours.

It took three days.

When the reply finally arrived, it did not solve anything. It did not restore access. It did not unlock my account. It did not address the actual problem.

It explained policy.

I explained that I had submitted a fair use counterclaim, which was immediately rejected. I explained that I had, in fact, reached out to UMG’s legal team to request a retraction, or at the very least, a bit of mercy. Nothing.

I was told that if an account is linked to another account that receives copyright strikes, restrictions can extend across the entire account. I was told that suspended users cannot maintain linked accounts. I was told that restoration depends on resolving the original issue.

Perhaps, if the strike is resolved, I can regain access to accounts for services I pay for. But, I also cannot access anything in these accounts to attempt to resolve the issue, let alone cancel my account.

That is a summary of rules.

It is not an answer.

After multiple attempts and being passed between support channels, the outcome was the same. The system did this. The system meant to do this. There is no meaningful path to fix it from here.

That may not be how it was phrased, but it is what it meant.

The Policy Sounds Orderly. The Outcome Is Absurd.

At a glance, the system makes sense. There are rules. There are enforcement mechanisms. There are processes.

In reality, it creates situations where:

• A user cannot access core account functionality
• A paying customer cannot cancel a subscription
• Years of personal data are effectively locked away
• The only recourse is layers of automated systems and support channels that ultimately redirect you back to policy without resolution.

If you cannot cancel, you are not in control.

If you cannot access your data, you do not own it.

If support can only explain why you are stuck instead of helping you get unstuck, then support is not functioning as support.

Ownership Is Starting to Look Like Permission

Creators are constantly told they own their content, their audience, and their platform presence.

That idea falls apart quickly under pressure.

If your access can be revoked due to account linkage logic, automated enforcement, or decisions made far upstream from your own activity, then what you have is not ownership.

It is permission.

And permission can be revoked without warning, without clarity, and without recourse.

This Is Bigger Than One Account

The legal fight between major labels and AI platforms is not going away. Lawsuits against Suno and Udio are already reshaping how these tools operate. As reported by The Verge, ongoing disputes between AI companies and major music labels are forcing changes in how generated content can be shared and distributed.

That pressure does not stay contained to those companies.

It flows outward into the platforms where that content lives, and eventually lands on users who have no direct involvement in the legal battle at all.

The largest players push for control. Platforms respond at scale. Everyone else deals with the consequences.

Where This Is Headed

The questions around AI music and content are real. What counts as fair use, what rights artists retain, and how these systems should be trained are all worth debating.

But none of that justifies breaking basic user control.

If a paying user can’t cancel a subscription because they can’t access the page required to do so – and can’t even reach a support representative to fix it, something is broken.

If a user cannot retrieve their data, something is broken.

If the only response available is a delayed explanation of policy, something is broken.

And if this is what the system looks like under pressure, then it is worth asking who it is actually built to serve.

From where I am sitting, it does not feel like balance.

It feels like control.

And it feels like the people with the least power are the ones expected to live with it.

We are literally witnessing the dawn of the next age of humanity, and simultaneously allowing it to be absorbed, regulated, and repackaged by companies that were never built to enable creativity, only to control and profit from it.

What’s happening right now with Universal Music Group and AI music is not some sudden moral awakening about protecting artists. It is the latest chapter in a much older pattern. For decades, artists have challenged major labels over who gets paid and who actually owns the work, especially as technology shifts.

The label war against AI is just the latest chapter in a long history of exploiting new tech to shortchange artists. From Eminem’s fight to prove that digital downloads were high-paying “licenses” rather than cheap “sales,” to Prince and Paul McCartney battling decades-old contracts to reclaim their masters, labels have always used legal loopholes to keep the lion’s share of emerging revenue.

Whether it’s “work for hire” clauses blocking Salt-N-Pepa from their own copyrights or the current push to treat AI-generated “likeness” as company property, the playbook remains the same: use outdated contract language to own the artist’s future. Taylor Swift’s re-recordings proved that the only way to win is to break the cycle of ownership entirely, showing that when labels can’t own the tech, they try to own the person.
