Announced on April 10, 1989, the Intel 486 was a technological milestone with 1.2 million transistors, sparking intense debates about speed limits and the actual needs of users at the time.
Intel announced the 486 CPU at Comdex on April 10, 1989. It was an expensive chip, priced at $950 each in quantities of 1,000. Looking back 35 years later, the contemporary reviews reveal how the rapid growth of the semiconductor industry far exceeded all initial predictions.
Misguided Predictions on Speed Limits
Writing in the May 8, 1989 issue of Infoworld, Michael Slater warned that the sixfold speed increase seen from 1981 to 1989 (from 5 MHz to 33 MHz) would not be repeated. History proved him wrong. Eight years after the 486, the Pentium II reached 300 MHz (a ninefold increase). Eight years after that, the Prescott Pentium 4 hit 3.8 GHz, a twelvefold increase over the Pentium II.
Slater also questioned the need for the chip in desktops. However, he correctly predicted that the shift toward graphical interfaces and multitasking would drive demand. While Wordstar ran fine on an 8088, Microsoft Word's graphical display required a 286 and performed much better on a 386 or 486.
Evolution or Revolution?
Michael J. Miller, writing in Infoworld a week after the launch, had mixed feelings. He noted it proved Moore’s Law was alive, with 1.2 million transistors and an integrated 387 math coprocessor and 8K cache. However, he called it an "evolution" rather than a "revolution," questioning what users would do with 100 MIPS of power if they were only running Lotus 1-2-3.
Douglas Barney of Computerworld noted that initial 486 systems would cost between $10,000 and $15,000—a staggering five-figure price tag for the time.
Power in Search of a "Killer App"
PC Magazine’s May 1989 issue ran a piece titled "The 486: All that Power With No Place to Go," arguing that most users wouldn't need such power for a long time. But the landscape changed with Windows 3.0 and 3.1. Graphical interfaces consumed resources rapidly, making the 486 affordable and necessary by 1992.
Beyond office apps like Microsoft Word (Word 97's real-time spell check finally outpaced the 486), gaming was a major driver. The legendary game Doom was the "killer app" for the 486; achieving smooth frame rates required a fast 486 and local bus video.
Legacy and Variants
To surpass 50 MHz, Intel introduced clock doubling with the 486DX2 in 1992. The 66 MHz speed became the performance "sweet spot" for years. The era also saw competition from Cyrix and IBM with SLC variants. These chips, like the IBM 486SLC2, allowed older 386-based systems to achieve near-486 performance, extending the life of many PCs.
Looking back, the Intel 486 was not just a technical milestone but a lesson in never underestimating the human need for processing speed. What was considered "overkill" in 1989 became the baseline just a few years later.
